Let’s Finish Catching Up: ODO 195

In the last episode I started to talk about all of the things that I’ve been up to during the hiatus, before getting thumb deep into a bloody mess. This time the plan is to give you the rest of the update that I meant to give last time. And oh boy! Do I have a lot of stuff to share with you! I’m not gonna cover everything right now. We all know that would take hours and I’m completely capable of doing it. Instead, I’ll hit some high points, and if you want to hear more about something, you can just let me know.
And finally, an update on how the featured podcast segment is changing, and my first rebooted podcast review feature is going to, my very first audio drama love, “Welcome to Night Vale.”

Welcome To Night Vale

Review: “Welcome to Night Vale” The show that makes you go, ok so I guess that’s a thing…

Original feature in ODO 66: Where Does Chocolate Milk Come From?

3 and half stars
3 1/2 Stars

WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE is a twice-monthly podcast in the style of community updates for the small desert town of Night Vale, featuring local “weather,” news, announcements from the Sheriff’s Secret Police, mysterious lights in the night sky, dark hooded figures with unknowable powers, and cultural events.

  • Pros:
    • In the early seasons, the story arc that flows through between episodes really adds depth to the world
    • Excellent writing and character development over the years.
    • Cecil’s voice and narrative style draws you in and makes you trust him, until you learn that he may have a little bit of bias.
    • The complexity of the story after 8 years of building is amazing. So many things have changed in this world since the first season that it’s hardly even the same world anymore. *wink*
    • The little running gags and dark humor will have you questioning what you just heard while also laughing your head off at the absurdity.
    • It’s got a taste of Lovecraft inspiration, but not directly .
    • The original musical score by “Disparition” sets the tone perfectly.
  • Cons:
    • You really can’t just jump in at any time. You’ve gotta go all the way back to the start.
    • The “weather” segments are very “hit or miss.”
    • There are way too many ads at the start of each episode. (I know it’s shitty to complain about this, but after a while it gets really annoying to listen to.)
    • The later seasons start dragging out and become difficult to follow.
    • The main storyline in later seasons is less cohesive. It is obvious in the storytelling when the writers stopped focusing on this show.

Good morning Bad Decisions: ODO 139

Holy cow the news has so many people just making bad decisions. Dumb rappers, horrible mothers, and someone who just doesn’t care about that warning sign at the zoo. All that aside, I’ve had my hands full juggling home/work/podcast stuff this week, including taking our little Bug to Kindergarten orientation. We went to see “Welcome To Night Vale” live last week, and as such, this week’s featured podcast is their commentary show, “Good Morning Night Vale.”

This Is Halloween: ODO 125

Happy Halloween everyone! This week I simply take a stroll through the headstones and talk about all of the things that get me in the mood for Halloween. From Music and movies to, of course, podcasts. I chat about the Netflix series “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” and have the long awaited Recommended Listening feature of “Sirenicide.”

(download mp3)

Hope you had a good Father’s Day. This week’s news brings on a few past stories including an ironic twist for a bank robber. I’ve also got some good news for gamers, a tattoo artist you definitely don’t want to cross and a sad sweet story about a couple from India. The “Jackass of The Week” comes courtesy of a seriously depressing study about chocolate milk. And finally, this week’s “Recommended Listening” features the dark and twisted world from “Welcome to Night Vale.”

German customs seized 35 tons of dangerous defective spinners in May and plan to crush them.
A New York woman is suing a Queens casino, it’s parent company, and the manufacturer of it’s slot machines after she was denied a $43 million jackpot from a penny slot machine. The New York State Gaming Commission ruled the jackpot to be an error.
  • Man Who Robbed Bank To Escape Wife, Sentenced To House Arrest
A 71 year old man who robbed a bank in 2016 claiming he wanted to get arrested to get away from his wife, has been sentenced to 6 months of house arrest. Lawyers and doctors ruled that the behavior was a result of undiagnosed depression and he should not serve jail time.

A tattoo artist in Sao Paolo, Brazil caught a 17 year old trying to steal his bike. As punishment, he tattooed his forehead with, “sou ladrão e vacilão,” which translates to, “I am a thief and a loser.” The tattooer and a friend, who assisted in the incident, were arrested for torturing the boy.
A recent Italian study on gaming and sexual health found that gamers appear less likely to experience premature ejaculation during sex. On the other hand, they also found that male gamers overall had a lower sex drive in general, so that may be the true reason for the low rate of PE.
A man in Indian woke up to find he had been bitten by a poisonous snake. After telling his wife that he loved her and wanted them to die together, she allowed him to bite her on the wrist as well. He later died, but she was treated at a local hospital and survived.

WAY Too Many Adults Think Chocolate Milk Comes From Brown Cows

A survey by the National Dairy Council found that 7% of adults polled think that brown cows produce chocolate milk. Another 48% don’t know where it comes from at all.
