ODO 49: I Suck at Valentine’s

I Suck at Valentine’s

Valentine’s Day is here so I’ve committed to focusing the entire episode on the holiday. The problem with that is, in a very general way, I’m no good at Valentine’s.

It’s not that I am not romantic. The problem comes mostly in that I’m too practical. I dislike giving flowers because they barely last a few days before dying. Chocolate seems very impersonal. There’s a million different heart shaped boxes of candy out there, and everybody has particulars about box chocolates. Don’t believe me, just look at any variety box of candy after a couple days. You’ll find a lot of the same things left behind.
Ultimately my failure boils down to a simple fact: I’m not that creative about gifts and the good ones are STUPID expensive.

Pokémon GO is keeping up its habit of introducing holiday themed updates with a Valentine’s Day event. To celebrate Valentine’s Day, Pokémon GO ‘s first in-game event of 2017 began February 8 at 7pm and ends at February 15 at 7pm. Among the features are increased candy and the spawning of more “Pink” pokemon.

These two started podcasting because they couldn’t seem to get enough of their own voices. Hearing the beautiful sounds made by their mouths, they were inspired to allow everyone to experience the joy, so they began sharing their sweet vocal love with the masses…

Don’t let the name and logo fool you. This is, at its most basic, a couple’s comedy show. Their theme song says it perfectly, “They only talk about themselves, I figure I’d warn ya.” Honestly, I’m ok with that. These two may just sit around talking about “whatever” as a couple, but it works because they’re funny. Considering we do a similar thing on “Mom and Dad Cuss” how could I really have a problem with it. You can’t fake the authenticity of a married couple picking on each other and fighting with the dog’s chew toys. It’s like hanging out with your cool married friends every week.

ODO 48: Big Dumb Ape

Big Dumb Ape

This week, I had a very upsetting encounter at work with what can only be described as a bully. A great big gorilla looking guy decided that he wanted to cuss me out and push me around for being professional and doing my job. Unfortunately I’m just not a very intimidating looking person and I’ve kinda been pushed around for most of my life. As much as I wanted to cuss him out in return, my professionalism beat out my temper.

Long story short, while I was at a job site this week, a guy came up to the front of the building saying he needed to get in to drop something at one of the offices. He said he worked in a neighboring office but his badge did not work for this side of the building. Of course, for security reasons, I can’t just let somebody into the building that I don’t know. I explained that to him and told him that I could take his envelope to the office he needed and drop it off for him. This then turned into him insisting that he come along.I told him I couldn’t let him in the building so he began cussing at me and repeatedly giving me the old poke in the shoulder like he’s tougher than me and I need to get out of his way. Eventually the building janitors, who had been witnessing his increasing aggression, escorted him to where he wanted, but not without him throwing me one more “fuck you” for good measure.

I hate bullies. To be fair, I think everybody does. But it’s strange having this sort of thing happen as an adult. I’m a scrawny 6 foot 140 lbs guy with thick glasses and a ponytail. I am not an intimidating presence. That being said, I’ve had little real “bullying” experience in my life. I had an incident in kindergarten that I can remember, but for the most part that’s it. I don’t really consider bitchy people in restaurants wanting to yell at the manager (which would be me,) bullying. That is just general human idiot rage. Honestly I  can’t believe there are still grown adults who would treat a complete stranger with such disrespect and hostility for simply doing my job. Maybe it’s because I have very limited adult social interaction. Maybe it’s because I try to avoid hostile situations. I don’t know really. What I do know is that this guy is a piece of shit and should be glad that I didn’t file a police report on him.

Should I have pushed back? Maybe. Would it have ended well? Absolutely not. Like the song says, ” you gotta know when to hold ’em and when to fold ’em.” This was time to fold ’em. Only things that would come from me pushing back with this guy were an ass whoopin for me and losing my job. Neither option is to my benefit. Personally I would have loved to clock this guy for his utter disrespect. Rage monster inside would want to stab him in the throat. Of course that’s what “anger management” is for. Logic brain says stay professional but firm, so I did, because that is what the situation required. Sometimes that’s just what you have to do.

There are absolutely cases where you have to fight back. If you are in a constant abusive situation, you have to do something about it. It doesn’t matter if it’s domestic abuse, workplace aggression, or cyber bullying, you have to stand up and report it to whoever you can. If it’s the police, parents, teachers, supervisors, neighbors, somebody has to be told so that you can escape the abuse. Nobody should be bullied for any reason. Why, then, did I not stand up to this guy? Simply put, I’m never gonna see this guy again. This was a one-off incident that will not be repeated. If I ever run into this guy in a similar fashion again, I’ll absolutely report his ass. Buy for today it’s in the past. I’m still a scrawny twig nerd guy, and he’s still a piece of shit gorilla asshole. But I’m the bigger man.

ODO: The Incident

On February 13, 2010 Adam was the victim of an “aggravated robbery” in which he was held at gunpoint and beaten over the head with a bat. After 7 years we are now sharing the most complete version of this story as it is a major part of who we both are today. It is not pretty, it is not funny. We make a few jokes to relieve tension, but it is still quite a heavy and dark tale to tell for both of us. We intentionally avoided names out of respect to others involved, and did not get into the court case involved, although it has already been settled.

ODO 47: Podcasting as a Dad

Podcasting as a Dad

Congratulations to Daniel J. Lewis from “The Audacity to Podcast” on the birth of his first son, “Noodle Baby.”

The birth of “Noodle Baby” inspired me to talk about the idea of how having kids kills your podcast. Of course I can’t keep to the topic at hand and go on talking about general Dadness. I love being a dad, and I love being a podcaster, but those things do in fact butt heads at times.
I have missed many weeks on this show due to family life, but that is part of the trade off of wearing both hats. Something has to take priority, and in my life that is always going to be my family.

This week I’ve got  a story about a mom who built her entire family home by hand using YouTube. I’ll cover some fun entertainment news, and in “Recommended Listening” I’ll probably spend more time talking about this week’s show than it takes to listen to it.

Normally I’d write something about the show but Emily puts it so perfectly herself:

The extraordinary history of the ordinary. Do you like trivia and fun facts? Have you lost hours to Wikipedia rabbit holes? Do you ever wonder about the history of everyday things in your world? The Story Behind … is the show for you! Warning: Your friends might tire of you starting sentences with, “I learned on a podcast …”

I am a fan of strange trivia, and this show has that in spades. Whether it’s the many origins of pretzels, or a deep dive into the legend that is Betty White, Emily always delivers great information with just a pinch of humor. Her pun game could only be matched by my wife’s. You will come out of every episode smiling having learned something cool. Five stars all the way.

“Small Things is a project that was started in late 2016. The idea was there for a while but we only decided to act upon it once my studies were complete. The aim is to do daily random Small Things that will make a big difference in the world and share my journey along the way. We hope that Small Things will be able help others who also want to make a difference in the world. We believe that if enough of us do Small Things then the world will be changed for the better.”

Texas Pride w/ ReAnna

This week I’m joined by my wife ReAnna from “Mom and Dad Cuss” because she just had to talk crap about the Dallas Cowboys loss this weekend. We then get into the exciting news that Bluebell Ice Cream is returning to Arizona just in time for our anniversary. She helps out with “BS From the News,” and nags at me while I talk about the “Epic Film Guys” in Recommended Listening.

In simplest terms, if you like comedy and you like movies, the “Epic Film Guys” podcast is the only movie podcast you need to listen to. Nick and Justin (and Justin’s assorted multiple personalities) talk craft beer and movies and don’t act stuck up about it. They’re funny, informed, and easy to get hooked on. Check them out, you wont regret it.

ODO 44: King of Queens

King of Queens

Hello 2017! For this week’s recommended listening I’ve got a double shot from the “King of Queens” RuPaul. In “BS From the News” I’ve got an epic case of the silent treatment, an epic prank, and a pair of really dumb criminals. (As if there’s any other kind.) Plus I wrap things up with a rant about the phrase “drive it like you stole it.”

Adios 2016

So Long 2016! This week I’m looking back on “The Year of No Survivors” and running through some of the MANY celebrities lost this year. Of course I’ll make fun of some weird news stories, and in “Recommended Listening” I’m featuring my old pal the NewMan. Then I take a look back at this show and how things have changed over the last year and what I’d like to do in 2017.

ODO 42: Defending Barbie

Defending Barbie

This week news broke that Amy Schumer is in talks to lead a Barbie movie. I can’t get behind this, but not for the reason you might think. Plus I launch a new “Recommended Listing” segment by talking about “PreRecorded Live.” As always there’s “BS from the News.” And in the the “Jackass of the Week” I have a word or two about being a responsible smoker.

Adam’s Rant

Amy Schumer is in talks to write and star in a live action Barbie movie.

Since news broke of the Amy Schumer lead Barbie movie, there has been more than enough hate thrown around. Most of that hate has to do with the fact that Amy Schumer bears ZERO resemblance to any Barbie doll. I don’t think she should be playing Barbie, but it has nothing to do with her looks. I honestly just don’t think she is the right person to play such an iconic character. The reported plot of the movie will be a comedy involving Schumer’s Barbie being an outcast who leaves the Barbie world for the “real” world. Lessons are learned and she returns to save the Barbie world… Blah blah blah. The problem is that Amy Schumer’s style of “funny” is completely counter to the wholesome image that Barbie represents. Plenty of people love her style of comedy. I don’t think she’s funny, but either way she is an “adult” comic. Barbie is a children’s character and should be given a treatment that is fitting of an icon of her stature. I honestly cannot picture any version of a comedy lead by Amy Schumer that could be true to who Barbie is and what she represents. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe it can work. I just honestly feel like putting any comedienne like Amy Schumer in the iconic shoes of Barbie, is degrading to the legacy of the role, and fundamentally damaging to the brand that has been around for nearly 60 years.
