For July my guest of the month is the ever wonderful Paul Csomo from the Varmints podcast. Unlike his previous appearance, this time we actually ended up talking about animals quite a bit. Of course there’s also the obligatory podcasting and tech talk. We talk about what it’s like living in states with such dangerous wildlife. Somehow we solve Florida’s invasive species problem. Plus, we joke about Paul’s experience eating bugs, and the difference between animal rights activists and conservationists, with a side track into Paul’s Funko Pop collection.
I’m back from vacation, and it’s one of those my yaking my head off kind of weeks. I’m going over all of the stuff from my recent vacation back to Texas, including my little brother’s wedding. Warning: I can’t tell a linear story, and I don’t even know how much of things I actually got to, but it’s fun sharing my vacation with you.
So you know how I mentioned my wife being sick during Foodstock? Now that plague has spread across our boys. Speaking of plague, the news brings tales of why you should be more careful about what you eat. And finally, in Recommended Listening, its time to learn some cool stuff. I’m talking about “Your Brain On Facts.”
It’s Guest of the Month time! For February, here to talk about the March 2019 Sunshine Summit, I’ve got Heather Welch from “Sunshine and Powercuts.” This time around there is a much wider variety of guests. We go in to some of the familiar returning faces, and learn a little about all of the new guests that you may not have heard of before. And of course I throw us off course, but we bring it all together in the end.
This week I find myself in a sea of parents at one of the most uncomfortable events of the year… Children’s winter concerts. Throwing the season out the window, in Recommended Listening I’ve got a new take on a horror movie podcast with “Kim and Ket Stay Alive… Maybe.” And I wrap it all up with a failed marriage between a woman… and a ghost.
Another month, another trip to the food trucks. This time, we went in with a plan and had the best, most filling trip yet. Speaking of family fun time, monster number 3 got a little bit of social media traction over a video of him watching his favorite team on BattleBots. Plus, I’ve got a Jackass Bridezilla with a big price tag, and a little chat about International Podcast Day.
This week I’ve got a quick-ish spot about the recent storm that hammered my neighborhood. In place of a full feature, for Recommended Listening I mention a couple shows I’ve just started listening to that will get a future feature. I’ve got a “Jackass” who’s affair cost him millions. And I ramble on about my recent epiphany that I’m really just not very good with friends.
Everything comes with a twist this week. According to the facebook groups, I’m not that much of an asshole. In podcast land I’m a nice guy. I don’t know how that happened but let’s roll with it. With that in mind, I’m throwing a twist into thhings and starting a series in “Recommended Listening” featuring all of the guests of the upcoming Sunshine and PowerCuts “Sunshine Summit 2018” leading up to the event. All of the news this week comes with a bit of a twist in each story. From movie theaters, to drug dealers, to severed fingers, “everything is not what it seems.”
An Atlanta theater accidentally played “Fifty Shades Freed” instead of Marvel’s “Black Panther” over the weekend. After five minutes of laughing and complaining, the theater eventually got the movies switched.
With an outbreak of yellow fever wrecking havoc throughout Brazil, one drug dealer decided he had to protect his operation. He kidnapped 2 nurses and stole all of the vaccine he could find. He then forced the nurses to vaccinate his entire neighborhood and base of operations.
Police in Peru have finally caught an escaped inmate who had switched places with is twin brother. While being visited by his twin, the inmate sedated him with a drug-laced soda, took his clothes and walked out the front door. The brother was investigated as an accomplice, and the director of the prison and the guards on duty were fired.
A woman obsessed with piercings and body modification decided to chop her finger off with bolt cutters. After leaving it in her freezer for a year, she decided to put it in a vile of alcohol and wear it as a pendant because she thought it was “cute.”
“Alysa Lucas hosts Best Forevers: A Podcast for Kindred Spirits with the goal of starting a movement to love more on our best friends, bros, and bosom buddies through sharing stories of friendship and talking about the most important topics to keeping those friendships afloat.“
“Stephen Jondrew and Stargate Pioneer host a weekly podcast dedicated for the Hobby Podcaster with tips and tricks on how to get started, sound great, have fun and not break the bank. Each week they talk about a podcasting topic in depth within an arc (like how to start a podcast, podcast gear for the hobby podcaster, and tips on different types of presenting-announcing-hosting) and then run down a current news item of importance to podcasting. They also run down any feedback and offer advice on how to make your hobby podcasting time better, easier and more fun.”
“The Varmints! podcast is an education/comedy podcast that’s all about animals! Every week two nerds name Paul and Donna do a whole bunch of research to bring you a mix of science, education, pop culture and comedy about all things that creep, crawl, slither, fly, jump, hop and swim on this planet one animal at a time.”

Good news everyone! I’ve got jury duty this week! And it’s not the first time either. Somehow the news took me on a strange trip through China. Even the Jackass of the Week goes there with a guy who thinks tofu is only for vegans. Then I lighten things up and learn something as I’m joined by a couple very special guests to talk about this week’s featured podcast: Varmints.
An architect in Honk Kong, one of the most populous cities in the world, has created a tiny house from old concrete water pipes. The 8 foot diameter pipes make for 1000 square feet of living space including mini fridge, shower, and convertible bench/ bed. Too bad they’re illegal in Hong Kong.
After her live-in boyfriend of over a year mysteriously disappeared, a Chinese woman discovered that “he” was in fact a woman in disguise. She is now looking into taking legal action against her ex- and his/her parents after having spent over 300,00 yuan on him/her and feeling scammed.
In China heavy drinking is a major part of negotiating a business deal. One service offers not only designated drivers to get the men and their cars home safely, but also a designated drinker service to do the drinking for them.
An unnamed vegan began ranting at a girl online after complimenting her on her tofu recipe, because he found out she wasn’t also vegan. The ranter raged at the young lady claiming that tofu is for vegans and that her eating it is appropriating it to be hip. (Spoilers- It’s not. It was invented by the Chinese.)
“The Varmints podcast is an education/comedy podcast that’s all about animals! And who better to teach you than two nerds named Paul and Donna? They aren’t exactly animal experts. More like animal enthusiasts. Anyway, every week they do a whole bunch of research to educate themselves and you the listener on all things that creep, crawl, slither, fly, hop and swim on this planet one animal at a time. It’s just like one of those fancy nature documentaries on PBS except without David Attenborough. Or any kind of expertise. Or fancy, polished production values by viewers like you. They might make tote bags someday, though.”
